summer is sinking her teeth into my bones
summer is sinking her teeth into my bones, like I am a rotten fruit in the mandibles of a bug. my peach fuzz skin lies broken open on the sand, the sea breeze slowly cooling my insides.
it rushes over and over me; oddly peaceful
like I am a child dozing at a family gathering, like I can hear the laughter as I am carried to bed.
that’s the thing about summer. she brings my childhood back. in the sand between my toes, in the sour berries breaking like blood between the crush of my jaw. she reminds me childhood was a breath, the stomach snatched from inside me on the funfair rides. it is a chocolate ice cream cone left melting on the floor
i wish i never forgot
